Elbtower(s)

Hamburg, DE
2018

The design for the tower was based on the competition task for the new "Elbtower" at the Elbbrücken area in Hamburg, Germany.

The requirements were a mixed-use building, reaching a height between 200 to 250m. No limit regarding the number of buildings that could be planned on the lot was mentioned.

The design places two connected towers on a 9.5m elevated base. Thus the base is leveled below the adjacent newly built train station but still above the high flood level. Therefore, it creates more awareness for the design by stepping onto the plaza. The North and South of the plaza have generously designed stairs which invite people to spend their time to relax or meet. It even offers the possibility of open-air-concerts during warm summer days right by the water.
With a height of 170m, the Northern tower is 80m lower than the Southern tower which reaches a height of 250m, hereby creating a high point, a landmark charater as well as a clear end to the "Hafencity" of Hamburg.

Connecting both towers by dynamically flowing into each other emphasizes the aspect of creating a unit while still having two separate towers with different usage. By choosing the construction of a double-skin-facade, the dynamic flow design can be facilitated.

While the smaller tower is planned with a hotel, co-living-spaces as well as penthouses, the taller tower is designed as an office tower only. The bridge connects both towers and serves as a communication element with event and meeting areas in addition to cafés and restaurants.
